Mozambique Head of Operations Tempo Inteiro

The ENGIE Energy Access is hiring a Mozambique Head of Operations.

Job Purpose/Mission

The Head of Operations will report to the Mozambique Country Director, will sit on the Mozambique Management team and be based in Maputo, Mozambique. The position will oversee all Mozambique operations and work directly with Mozambique and Global sales, customer service and engineering teams on the ground to design, test, execute, analyze, and refine innovative operations systems and processes.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work with a creative and diverse team of business professionals and engineers in a fast-paced start up at the front lines of renewable energy and mobile payment technology. Candidates must have a passion for entrepreneurship, renewable energy and sustainable development in Frontier Markets. The role will be working on critical projects with real and immediate impact and will have the opportunity to travel domestically and internationally to understand our customer base and trainings.

Main Activities

Leadership

• You are part of a highly effective and top performing leadership team! Be a role model and leader in the organization by living our values and through active participation and collaboration with other management team members to meet our Mozambique and Global goals.
• Develop and track towards Mozambique Operations 1 year, 3 year and 5 year Mozambique strategies, goals, and KPIs in line with Mozambique and Global objectives; evaluate and report results and iterate where needed.
• Be an active strategic thought partner on the management team with joint ownership in development and achievement of Mozambique goals.
• Pro-active cross-departmental communication of challenges as they arise and proactive development of solutions to these challenges.
• Work effectively with other department heads to ensure all goals are met, specifically Product team and Commercial team, such as successful product launches or opening of new points of sale

Team and Culture

• Manage and lead production, logistics, inventory management, quality assurance, and refurbishment teams of over 30 team members and build the team for scale and efficiency.
• Create a culture of teamwork with a focus on quality, honesty, and integrity and hold the team accountable to those standards.
• Ensure the team is fully supported, engaged and has the training & tools needed to be successful in their role.
• Suggest and implement changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase safety and efficiency of department.
• Design and conduct operations team trainings and coordinate trainings with customer experience and commercial teams for full team focus on inventory management, minimizing shrinkage, health & safety, etc.
• Work with Talent and Admin teams to support in recruitment and admin related functions around recruitment and wider initiatives around team engagement and learning & development.

Represent R&D to the leaders of the A2E organization

• Be the top technology representative in A2E who understands trends, drives innovation, and leads technology thought leadership.
• Be the authority and final decision maker on major technology topics.
• Coordinate with Supply Chain leads to effectively work with contract manufacturers and suppliers in China.

Inventory Management & Process Improvement

• Forecast and complete monthly inventory orders from China (6 month lead time) with Mozambique Country Director, Product and Commercial teams and Global Operations team to ensure we have what we need for current and potential future product lines.
• Analysis of cost of production, distribution, warehousing and other operations expenses to identify and improve cost and operational effectiveness.
• Monitor and evaluate internal operation processes by collecting feedback from stakeholders to continually evolve and improve our operations to better support the organization and our customers.
• Analyze current shrinkage rates and assess process design and improvements to minimize shrinkage in the Kampala warehouse and in the field / at points of sale.
• Coordinate periodic stock counts and reconcile with Finance team from physical count, to ERP system (SAP) to internal inventory and sales database.
• Work closely with Global Operations team in updating inventory management processes and systems to minimize shrinkage and provide better visibility into stock availability and movements at over 40 points of sale around the country.
• Work with Global operations team to ensure strict health and safety policies are developed and followed.
• Design systems in partnership with the software team (and global Operations team) to build (or purchase) and implement data-guided inventory forecasting, ordering and management systems.
• Ensure identification and proper documentation of all SOPs and that continuous improvement is core to our operations strategy.

Warehousing and Production

• Lead the scale up of operations at the Engie Mozambique warehouses and production facilities to maximize efficiency and reduce costs.
• Implement and continuously manage organizational best practices at the main warehouse and additional offsite storage facilities to ensure accurate stock records, maximize space usage and minimize costs.
• Oversee production, quality assurance, inventory management teams and facilities to ensure high quality product outputs of sellable inventory and timely stock preparation and delivery.
• Oversee refurbishment to ensure high quality product repair and refurbishment for customer service in the field and oversee refurbishment of items to be re-used as swap stock or re-sold to customers.

Logistics and last mile distribution

• Coordinate incoming stock deliveries from China with 3rd party logistics partner.
• Critically assess in-county logistics options, routes and costs to optimize supply chain efficiency of solar power systems, accessories and after-sales service items.
• Develop improvements for our last-mile sales and distribution processes and mechanisms to reduce/minimize the cost of distribution, cost of sale, and inventory shrinkage.
• Forecast, plan, and execute field inventory deliveries to ensure the field is stocked.

Knowledge and Skills

• Leadership & project management experience: We are looking for entrepreneurial candidates who have started or contributed significantly to a particular project, team or new company. We especially value candidates who have seen projects through from start to finish, from design to scale up phase.
• Work experience: 5+ years of experience in warehouse and logistics management at the Manager level or above, preferably in FMCG; prior experience managing medium to large sized teams; prior experience with ERP systems (SAP) and inventory management.
• Education: University degree, diploma or relevant qualification from a recognized institution.
• Strong problem solving and critical thinking ability.
• Solution oriented and the drive to work independently with no supervision – must be proactive.
• Very strong attention to detail and data analysis skills.
• Strong Excel skills, willingness to learn systems (Engie DataBase & Tableau).
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal (English proficiency).
• A passion for Engie and our customers.
