The Fiscal Policy and Growth (FPG) Department leads the World Bank Group’s policy dialogue and engagement with countries to strengthen macro-fiscal foundations, including debt sustainability, debt management, public expenditure, and domestic resource mobilization, trade and investment and to accelerate job creation and inclusive growth.
FPG links the macroeconomic dialogue with programs focused on expanding the role of the private sector in economic development. In its day-to-day engagement, FPG supports Ministries of Finance, Planning, Economy, Industry and Trade, and Production in pursuing reform agendas that strengthen job creation through inclusive, private sector-led growth. The FPG unit for Southern Africa and East Africa (EAEM2) is looking for a local economist to be based in Maputo, Mozambique. The selected candidate will contribute substantially to analytical work and lending operations. She or he will report to the FPG Practice Manager covering the EAEM2 unit, which comprises 14 countries across three Country Management Units: AECS1 (South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia), AECS2 (Mozambique, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles), and AECC2 (Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Burundi). The unit has a strong focus on prudent macro-fiscal policies, structural reforms, inclusive growth, and job creation.
The World Bank’s FPG engagement in Mozambique supports the country’s efforts to strengthen macroeconomic stability, fiscal and debt sustainability, domestic resource mobilization, and the management of natural-resource revenues, while fostering a more diversified, productive, and job-rich economy. The work program combines policy dialogue, financing operations, technical assistance, and analytical work, including macroeconomic monitoring, Macro Poverty Outlooks, economic updates, public finance analysis, and work on growth and jobs. Particular attention is given to translating Mozambique’s natural-resource potential into broad-based development outcomes, strengthening institutions and fiscal frameworks, and supporting private-sector development and economic resilience.
As an Economist for EAEM2, you will contribute to the country team covering Mozambique and, as needed, to the regional FPG team working on other countries. The Economist will be based in Maputo and work closely with the Division Director, Senior Country Economist, Lead Economist, and other members of the country team, and will report to the FPG Practice Manager. The position requires strong analytical capability, sound judgment, close engagement with government counterparts and development partners, and the ability to deliver high-quality outputs under tight deadlines.
