The Street Child is hiring an Education Coordinator.

Background

Street Child (SC) is a rapidly growing, child-focused, humanitarian, and development organization. In 2023, Street Child celebrated reaching over one million children across 25 countries over its fifteen years of existence. This was accomplished with and through a growing network of more than 200 national and local actors. Our vision is that all children are safe, in school and learning.

Street Child has been operating in Mozambique since 2019, focusing on Cabo Delgado province with a portfolio of approximately $1 million dedicated to child protection and education in emergencies. All programme implementation is done through local partners, supported by a team of 10 staff members.

Role Purpose

To develop and manage Street Child’s Cyclone Chido response education activities in Cabo Delgado, overseeing staff, budget, and activities. The role requires strong technical expertise in education in emergencies, particularly within conflict-affected contexts, and collaboration with local authorities and stakeholders. The coordinator will ensure the effective delivery of quality education programs aligned with Street Child’s mission and donor requirements in Cabo Delgado. With a growing education portfolio projected for 2025 and beyond in Mozambique, there are significant opportunities for contract extension subject to performance.

Specific Responsibilities

• Project Management & Implementation: Develop and implement detailed work plans for project activities, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, national and international policy and guidelines and donor requirements. Monitor progress against targets, adapting plans as necessary. Manage project resources effectively, including budget allocation and accurate tracking of actual expenditure on a monthly basis. Maintain accurate and up-to-date project documentation.
• Team Leadership & Capacity Building: Provide direct line management and supervision to Education Officers, facilitators, and volunteers. Conduct regular performance appraisals, provide constructive feedback, and implement professional development opportunities for team members. Build the capacity of teachers and other education personnel in the target communities through training and mentoring.
• Technical Oversight & Quality Assurance: Ensure the technical quality and effectiveness of all education activities contributing to children being safe, in school and learning, adhering to Street Child’s policies, best practices, and donor guidelines. Monitor and adapt program implementation to ensure adherence to standards and address any challenges or issues promptly.
• Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination: Develop and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders, including local government officials, community leaders, other NGOs, UN agencies, and donor representatives.
• Represent Street Child at relevant meetings and forums. Actively participate in coordination mechanisms, such as clusters or working groups, to ensure effective collaboration. Advocate for the rights of children affected by displacement and conflict.
• Reporting & Monitoring: Prepare regular and timely progress reports, including narrative reports, financial reports, and other required documentation. Utilize monitoring and evaluation (M&E) data to track progress, identify challenges, and inform adaptive management strategies in collaboration with SC leadership and technical staff.
• Budget Management: Develop and manage the project budget within allocated funds, ensuring responsible expenditure and accurate financial reporting. Work collaboratively with finance staff to ensure compliance with all financial regulations.
• Logistics and Operations: Oversee logistical aspects of the project, including procurement, supply chain management, and asset management. Ensure adequate resources are available for effective program implementation.

Essential Skills and Experience

• Mozambican national.
• Technical education expertise: experience delivering education in emergencies (EIE) programming of a comparable size in Mozambique is essential.
• Experience in complex/volatile contexts, and education project implementation.
• Proven results in relevant responsibilities.
• Proficient in English and Portuguese (written and verbal). Local languages are an asset.
• Knowledge of the education context in Cabo Delgado.
• Experience working with children and/or educators.
• Significant experience in the field of Emergency pedagogy (TiCC, Inclusive Education), MHPSS or Child Protection considered in lieu.
• Experience in running TLS/ FLN programming/ integrated CPIE – EIE.
• Experience liaising with multiple stakeholders (government, donors, UN, NGOs).
• University degree preferred; significant experience may substitute.
• Understanding of SPHERE and INEE Minimum Standards is an asset.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Experience managing education in emergencies programming of a comparable size; including the development and running of temporary learning spaces, teacher training and capacity development, and/or interventions focused on improving foundational literacy and numeracy, will be a distinct advantage in this role.
• Experience working with marginalized groups including street-connected children, CAAFAG, IDPs children and out of school children etc.
• Experience delivering integrated child protection and education programming.
• Experience with strategic development, proposal, and budget creation.
• Experience managing an education in emergency team.
