Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Overall job purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the Rural Entrepreneurship Intern (REI) will support the Food Security and Livehoods (FSL) team in providing technical expertise on entrepreneurial interventions to improve the livelihoods and family economy, with a particular focus on community capacity-building and awareness sessions about agriculture, livestock, the economic transformation of rural livelihoods by ensuring value addition to rural resources and products together with household technical support for those with difficulties and special vulnerabilities; it will also include the development of strategies to marketing and monetise livelihoods. The REI will be daily focused on the income-generating component of the FSL activities assisting the Officers, and bridging production and value chain development from all activities, such as staple crops production, horticulture, livestock and other entrepreneurial actions. Under this position, JIA offers an overarching and fulfilling experience for entry-level professionals and new graduates who wish to pursue a career in rural economy and agribusiness targeting fragile communities. The REI will join a multi-disciplinary, flexible and experienced team that factors constant innovation and supportive environment to pilot ground-breaking initiatives. The position requires extensive fieldwork and movement in Cabo Delgado districts.

Tasks

Strategy and Vision

• Actively supports the values of Johanniter and shapes programme work according to these values.
• Together with the Senior Programs Manager and Project Manager, ensures the development and implementation of the Johanniter International Assistance strategy in her/his area of responsibility.
• Contributes to the development and implementation of the global strategy of Johanniter International Assistance.

Field work

Programme Support:

Under the guidance of the Project Manager:

• Review the current project design and implementation plans to identify windows of opportunity for activity transformation to further support the targeted family and community economies.
• Prepare and roll-out strategies and techniques to engage district authorities and targeted families and other stakeholders to identify and map local entrepreneurial opportunities, market links and networks, and product and service development or transformation needs/gaps (adding value).
• Conduct participatory, interpersonal and individual community engagement sessions to explore ways of capitalising existing value chains, products, services and skills to economically transform the rural livelihoods from all the sources.
• Provide technical support in sensitising and assisting targeted families and communities on transforming and adding economic value to local products and services.
• Design innovative and contextually relevant capacity-building and technical assistance activities and methods to support targeted families develop or improve the market value of the selected livelihoods.
• Based on the participatory consultations, advise the Project Manager and the FSL team, and compile quick guides/compendiums/lists of impactful and localised rural entrepreneurship measures covering agriculture and livestock, forest and mineral-based industries and services/skill-based livelihoods.
• Support FSL related management activities, including preparing, scheduling and conducting meetings, field visits, and stakeholder engagement.
• Ensure good working relationships with local leaders, community members, district authorities, contractors and other stakeholders, fostering their buy-in and program ownership.
• Ensuring that all technical guidance the project team provides is translated into technically sound actions at the field level.
• Share field-based insights to help the project team implement tailored measures/adaptations to improve activity delivery and results.
• Help the project team compile weekly and monthly progress reports (quantities and qualitative) and other program-related communication pieces.
• Support the Project Manager in compiling and keeping a record of all required documents related to FSL activities, including distribution and post-distribution monitoring.

Person Specification

Professional Qualification and Experience:

• High School, Professional Training Program or BSc/BA in Entrepreneurship, Agriculture, Economics, Agribusiness, Community Development, or a combination of a University degree in agriculture/livestock and a relevant professional training.
• Minimum 01 years of proven work experience in entrepreneurship in rural environments, value chains development and/or agribusiness.
• Some experience with sustainable livelihood, including smallholder farmers, market linkages, income-generating activities, livestock, climate resilient agriculture, agroforestry, permaculture.
• Experience in delivering training and other capacity-building initiatives to communities.
• Proven experience in engaging rural families to generate/manage local business.
• Some experience or knowledge about gender sensitivity/transformation programming.
• Full commitment to humanitarian principles, gender equality, and the rights of displaced persons and protection of children.

Skills

• Familiarity with entrepreneurship programming and market development in rural areas.
• Proactive and problem-solving attitude.
• Good planning and analytical skills.
• Excellent computer skills and competency in Microsoft Office.
• Detail-oriented individual with good multi-tasking abilities and good communication skills, both oral.
• Fluent in Portuguese. Dominion of local languages desired, Good dominion of English an advantage.
• Experience in the implementation of social and behavioural change and Community engagement activities.
• Proactive, open-minded and creative individual able to find innovative solutions to challenges.
• Able to work well both within a team and independently; culturally sensitive and flexible to adjust quickly to challenging and fast-changing context; coping well with stress and in intense and difficult environments.

Remuneration

• According to JIA Mozambique Salary Grid, Interns receive a fixed gross monthly compensation of 20,000.00 MZN.
