Overall Job Purpose

The Johanniter International Assistance (JUH) is seeking a Communications Officer to manage internal and external communications and visibility of projects for the JUH Mozambique country program. He or she will be responsible for designing and delivering a range of communications products, including country office fact sheets, VIP visit briefing materials, program success stories, photos and videos, interviews with beneficiaries, blog posts for the JUH’s website, interviewing and writing staff profiles, annual program reports, newsletters, among other tasks. He or she will be expected to develop and maintain a communications strategy for the country program, train staff on communications approaches, and be accountable for meeting JUH’s Mozambique contractual donor visibility requirements. The Communications Officer will report to the Country Director and work closely with the Programs, PMEAL teams/Units and partners. The position based in Pemba and requires extensive field work and movement in Cabo Delgado province as well as some travels in Manica and Sofala provinces.

What you will do

1. Strategy and Vision

• Actively support the values of Johanniter and thus shapes the country programme accordingly
• Support the development and implementation of the country strategy in line with JIA strategy
• Support the development of long-term programming as well as exit strategies

2. Leadership

3. Communication, Visibility and Advocacy:

• Develops and implements communications strategies and work-plans, campaigns, events, and other initiatives in support of the program activities
• Lead efforts to enhance the visibility of JUH’s projects by creating impactful communication products such as success stories, case studies, and visual content that showcase the positive outcomes of interventions. This includes identifying and documenting human stories that reflect the organization’s impact on individuals and communities
• Researching, preparing fact-checking, editing, and producing professional media and communications materials for various audiences and ensuring their timely dissemination and amplification via JUH and non-JUH communications channels at country level and, where appropriate, globally
• Drafts talking points and messages for the Office, and for sharing with communicators at regional and HQ level
• Designs and implement training sessions for staff on effective communication techniques, ensuring that team members understand how to convey key messages and engage with various audiences effectively. This includes providing resources and guidelines for communication best practices
• Ensure compliance with contractual donor visibility requirements by producing high-quality reports and communication materials that highlight project successes and meet specific donor guidelines. This includes preparing materials for donor meetings and events
• Establishes metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies. Regularly assess the reach and impact of communications, making adjustments as necessary to improve engagement with stakeholders and donors
• Maintains up to date knowledge the humanitarian and development situation, trends and issues in the country
• Maintain an up-to-date database of journalists and media organizations, respond to media enquiries and build dialogue with individual journalists, editors, and news desks
• Develops and implement crisis communication plans that address potential risks to JUH’s reputation and operations. This includes creating protocols for timely and accurate communication during emergencies or challenges faced by the organization
• Takes a proactive role in managing communications during crises, ensuring timely and accurate information dissemination to stakeholders
• Prepare and manage the organization’s communication budget

4. Reporting, Monitoring, Evaluation Accountability and Learning

• Work closely with Program and PMEAL teams to gather information and content that can be used for reporting and communications. This collaborative approach ensures that communication efforts are aligned with programmatic objectives and that data collected supports both monitoring and storytelling efforts

5. Representation, liaison and coordination

• Promote a principled approach to advocacy in collaboration with relevant internal and external stakeholders and ensure that external messaging is evidence-based and driven by field realities.
• Maintaining professional interaction on humanitarian media relations with media organizations and other important external stakeholders, such as governments, Private Sector, NGOs etc.)

6. Safeguarding

• Contributes actively to the implementation of the JHU’s Code of Conduct and all safeguarding policies, ensuring that programme activities and community engagement processes are conducted in a manner that protects the dignity, safety, and rights of all programme participants.
• Maintains high levels of confidentiality at all times when aware of any safeguarding issue or concern.
• Avoids taking any independent steps to investigate any known safeguarding incident or rumor, and refers all such matters promptly through JUH’s designated reporting channels.
• Reports any safeguarding rumor or incident without delay through appropriate JUH mechanisms.
• Disseminates Johanniter’s position of zero tolerance regarding exploitation, abuse, and harassment, as well as all relevant safeguarding policies, to all staff, partner organization’s, community volunteers, and stakeholders engaged in JUH’s activities.

What you bring

• Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health, or related field. Masters of Public Health is an added advantage.
• A minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience in management, coordination; implementation of health and nutrition interventions in a humanitarian/development context; conducting health/SRH, nutrition, WASH baseline assessments, rapid humanitarian assessments
• Experience leading teams in project implementation in a complex international development environment and/or conflict zones
• Experience of working with international humanitarian donors (USAID-BHA, ECHO, GFFO, BMZ, etc.) and knowledge of their specific requirement.
• Knowledge of health and nutrition technical standards
• Proven capacity to negotiate and work with governments and partners
• Experience in WASH, protection, gender-based violence, mental health support is desirable
• Previous experience in project location desirable (Cabo Delgado Province).
• Detail-oriented with good multi-tasking, communication skills, both oral and written
• Knowledge of English and Portuguese languages is essential (oral and written).
• Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships, within and outside Johanniter.
